Natasha would be horrified to learn that my temple had been grazed, earlier that day, by a bullet

This, here, was no manโ€™s land.
I spotted haystacks at the edge of a distant field and pictured myself lying there in the hay with my sweetheart, weaving flowers in her wavy, red hair. I watched the sky darkening and imagined her in my arms. If this were a time of peace, we would gaze together at the stars, rising ever so slowly over both of us.
Above me, birds were chirping as they flew over mud, blood and the stench of dead bodies. I was puzzled at the craziness in this place, where beauty coexisted, strangely enough, with horrific ugliness.
For a moment, I recalled the stories my dad had told me about trench warfare, dating back to his service in the First World War. Unprotected from rain, snow, and cold, many of the trenches had been continually flooded, exposing the troops to frostbites. With swollen feet, he had waded through water, surrounded by a multitude of frogs and faced with the nightmarish sight of red slugs and beetles with weird horns, all wriggling along the ledges. And then, the rats... Large and utterly fearless, they had invaded the foxholes. Feeding upon the dead had made them contemptuous of the living.
I stretched out as best I could at the bottom of my trench and relaxed into feeling lucky. Of course, Natasha would be horrified to learn that my temple had been grazed, earlier that day, by a bulletโ€”but unlike what my father had gone through, my discomfort was not amplified by the ravages of winter.
The mound just ahead of me was in bloom. It was springtime. For that, and for the rustle of her letter in my breast pocket, which brought her closer to me, I felt grateful.

Meet my author friend
Paul Douglas Lovell

Today I have the pleasure to present a Black Country Lad who now lives in the Black Boy Land or Schwarzbubenland as it is called in Switzerland. For Paul Douglas Lovell, a difficult start has given spice and excitement to what was destined to be a dull life. Or that's how he sees it. Raised by his father, the youngest of five he spent many hours Playing Out. His school years - Empty Corridors - were disruptive. An inconvenience standing in-between his freedom and the big wide world.
Last but not least...

Greek Fishermen's Soup

(The secret ingredient? Lots of heart...)

Ingredients:

  • 1 kilo whole white fish such as red snapper, cod, monkfish, mullet, or any smaller fish if available. Scale and clean, but leave the head on. This adds taste.
  • 8 cups of water (preferably sea water if cooking near the sea)
  • ยผ cup olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, diced (You can also use ยฝ cup of chopped celery leaves if they are young)
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 3 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2-3 chopped tomatoes.
  • 1 chopped carrot.
  • Saffron
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • Fresh thyme
  • Salt and pepper.
  • 2 lemons
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley
Directions:

  •  Place the water and fish into a pot and season lightly with salt. Bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes or until fish is cooked
  • Transfer the fish to a platter and strain the broth to catch any fish bones. Discard the bones.
  • Clean the pot and return the broth.
  • Add the onion, celery, tomatoes, carrot, potatoes, garlic to the pot.
  • Add the olive oil, saffron, bay leaf and thyme sprigs. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Cook over medium heat until potatoes are soft.
  • At this point you can add clams, mussels or shrimps, etc. and continue cooking until cooked through.
  • Pull the meat from the cooked fish into chunks and add it to the soup at the last minute.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  • Garnish with parsley and serve with lemon wedges and crusty bread.
